Project Description
Travel to Guatemala
Some of the most beautiful and intriguing places in the world have histories of colonization and conflict. Guatemala is no exception. Despite its incredible landscapes, culture, and agricultural bounty, the majority of Guatemala’s population lives in a state of material poverty and food insecurity. It’s relatively easy for tourists to skirt the edges of Guatemala’s reality. With curiosity, open minds, and hearts, we take a deeper look at the complexities of Guatemala’s past and present with visits to The Garden’s Edge partners in the department of Baja Verapaz.
In all of our work, and especially in our travels to Guatemala, we are committed to:
- building relationships of reciprocity.
- protecting the beautiful landscapes and communities of Guatemala by making our trips as low-impact as possible.
- supporting community-based initiatives and local leaders.
- respecting, and celebrating the cultures that host us.
A portion of your trip fee goes towards funding these programs for Maya Achi families in Guatemala:
- Agroecology: Seed Saving and The Milpa Movement (Corn, Beans, and Squash)
- Climate Resilience: Water Projects and Reforestation
- Health: Support for Traditional Medicine and Nutrition
- Education: Ancestral Skills Camp, and Scholarships
- Creative Solutions Mini Grants for Innovative Social and Economic Projects
