Project Description

Help Qachuu Aloom Build Their Office

In 2004, we received support from The Garden’s Edge to buy a piece of land on the outskirts of Rabinal. The land had no vegetation, the soil was depleted, and there was no access to water. It seemed impossible to cultivate.

Almost 20 years have passed and with much effort and support, we have turned this arid land into an oasis with many varieties of medicinal plants, trees, and different garden designs – an incredible example of regeneration and healing.

We’ve built beautiful models of ecological structures including: a seed bank, where we store a great variety of seeds that we’ve been able to rescue and preserve, a temazcal, (sauna) where people from different communities receive healing treatments and therapies, a bamboo structure where we hold our meetings and attend groups, and an adobe lodge for housing groups.

However, we lack the resources to build our own administrative offices.

During all of these years, we’ve been renting a house that we adapted to fit our needs but the space has inadequate light and ventilation and is no longer big enough for our growing staff. After the pandemic there was a huge rise in the rental prices. Now we are paying 3 times more a month than when we started.

Help us make better use of our economic resources.

Sadly, with modernity, the use of ecological  materials such as adobe and brick is being lost and replaced with materials like concrete blocks. We have been watching these changes over the past two decades. And we want to leave a different model for our children.

Our plan is to build our offices with earthen bricks made in our own community. By using ecological materials we support the local economy while caring for our Mother Earth. Not only that, but we also hope to inspire other groups that come and visit us.

We want to promote and demonstrate that these local materials can still be used!
