Intergenerational Ancestral Skills Camps, Achi Language Classes, Food Sovereignty Workshops, and Scholarships for Maya Achi Youth
At The Garden’s Edge, learning is key to personal and organizational growth. We offer our staff and our partners educational opportunities to attend workshops, conferences, and cultural exchanges.
In 2007, The Garden’s Edge began offering scholarships to Maya Achi women and youth. To date, we’ve helped over 115 people finish high school in a region where, people have on average only 6-years of formal education, and 28% of adults above the age of 15 are illiterate.
This year, our Program Coordinator Josselin Chun who speaks Achi, Spanish, and English, opened a language school to help young students learn their native language.
Also in 2023, we held our first Intergenerational Ancestral Skills Camp at the Mesoamerican Permaculture Institute on Lake Atitlan with 16 parents and children ages 8-13. It was an amazingly profound experience and we look forward to holding a similar camp in Rabinal next year. Check out this short video.
Inspired by this experience, The Garden’s Edge has been organizing Ancestral Skills Camps with families in Albuquerque too!
The Garden’s Edge supports a wide variety of non formal educational opportunities, including:
- Professional development for our staff and partner organizations
- Participation in traditional healing courses and workshops
- Agroecology mentorships for Maya Achi youth
